Certified Translation

A general description of a Certified Translation is a translation that has been  stamped by an authority. It fulfils the requirements for official procedures in the country in question.

The requirements vary from country to country depending on the legal system in place there. However, qualified members of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting have authorisation to certify their own translations.

Specific situations

Firstly, any translation presented in court requires certification. Secondly, for admission to a university in a foreign country the establishment will often insist on certified translations. Thirdly, official bodies require translations to be certified for formal procedures. Interestingly, we are currently seeing a high number of translations being certified for immigration, visa, work and residence purposes.

Example documents include birth certificates, marriage certificates, decrees absolute, death certificates, certificate of good standing, academic transcripts, academic certificates, etc.

What is involved in a certified translation?

A certified translator certifies that their work is a complete, accurate and true  translation of the original document. This is a statement of truth and you will see it at the bottom of each page.

The translator must stamp, date and sign each page of the translation. This protects against misuse and tampering. In addition, it enables the authorities to verify the translator’s credibility.

What’s more, depending on the country in question, the translator will often attach the original documents to the translation for the authorities to compare.

Finally, Bella Translations sends customers a digital copy of their documents and a hard copy by post in a ‘Do not bend’ envelope.
